PFT: Ray Lewis isn't playing like he's truly healed

Green Bay Packers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

The realities of a 53-man roster make it impossible for the Packers to rest all of their starters Sunday against Detroit.

But it sounds like they are going to sit as many key players as possible. Let?s break it down:

Too hurt to play

Wide receiver Greg Jennings (knee), running back James Starks (knee/ankle), return man Randall Cobb (groin), and tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee) won?t play. They would likely be shaky to play even if this was a playoff week.

On the borderline

The Packers list cornerback Charles Woodson (knee) and linebacker Clay Matthews (ankle) as questionable after being limited in practice all week. They would be playing if this was the playoffs, but it sounds like the defensive stars will be rested for most of Sunday?s game, if not all of it. ?They are getting some earned star treatment.

Rodgers uncertain

Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldn?t even confirm whether Aaron Rodgers would start the game when asked.

?The most important thing with Aaron is he?s ready to play. Whether he starts, we?ll talk about that today,? McCarthy said.

Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com believes Rodgers won?t even play a snap. Rodgers played coy.

?What did Mike say?? Rodgers asked. ?I?m going to leave it up to Mike. I?ll let Mike answer that.?

Returning starters

The Packers will kick the tires on two injured starters in preparation for the playoffs. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, who has been sorely missed the last few weeks, is expected to return from a concussion. ?Tackle Chad Clifton will play for the first time since hurting his hamstring in Week 5.

Coaches will watch Clifton closely. He?s essentially auditioning to start in the postseason.

Add it all up, and the Lions have a great chance to win in Lambeau and earn the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee from the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan series starring American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Russian officials rattled by breach at rocket plant

MOSCOW | Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:57pm EST

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's deputy prime minister vowed Thursday to punish "sleepy" security officials after bloggers posted dozens of photos of an apparently unguarded strategic military rocket motor factory near Moscow.

Blogger Lana Sator said she and friends met not a soul, much less any security guards, as they roamed around state rocket-maker Energomash's plant, snapping pictures, on five separate night-time excursions in recent months.

She posted almost 100 pictures of decrepit-looking hardware from inside a rusted engine-fuel testing tower, the plant's control room and even its roof at lana-sator.livejournal.com

Russian media cited a senior space agency official, speaking anonymously, who described the breach as a shock of the same scale as German pilot Mathias Rust's brazen Cessna flight under Soviet radar to land on Red Square in 1987.

"It showed a complete inability to protect anything whatsoever," the official told Izvestia. Space agency Roskosmos declined comment on the incident when reached by Reuters.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the security failure was "unacceptable," warning in a televised meeting with Roskosmos chief Vladimir Popovkin that "sleepy cats" who failed to maintain security at strategic defense sites face punishment.

Rogozin, Moscow's former NATO envoy appointed to oversee the defense and space sectors this month, also criticised Roskosmos for a string of recent botched launches.

"We must take urgent steps to restore order in this sphere," he said, ordering Roskosmos to present a report explaining the underlining causes of the failures by the end of January.

Last week, a Russian communications satellite crashed, adding to a string of humiliating launch failures that marred this year's celebrations of 50 years since Yuri Gagarin's first human space flight.

What was to be post-Soviet Russia's debut interplanetary mission to Mars's moon last month was stuck in orbit.

In August, the crash of an unmanned cargo craft cast doubt over Moscow's ability to guarantee International Space Station operations, while the loss of a $265-million communication satellite hurt its commercial launch record.

Monday, Russia also delayed by 25 days a launch for European satellite giant SES, citing technical glitches.

Why the Pro Bowl is the Golden Globes of Sports

Tech tipsComputer Tricks

The Golden Globes nominations for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp last year for The Tourist were pretty much the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?s way of saying it, ?F*ck it. We?re not faking it anymore. We just want stars to show up.? This year, the names changed but the trend remained the same. I mean c?mon, Glee and New Girl get nods but no love for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, or Louie? The Globes? process consistently reeks of a popularity contest and some NFL fans might agree that some of the more recent Pro Bowl picks in high profile categories have the same stomach-turning stench.

Take for example this year?s QB picks. The top quarterbacks in the NFC and AFC were predictable: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Okay, I get that. Then there are the more questionable selections, like San Diego?s Phillip Rivers and New York?s Eli Manning. Phillip Rivers may have put up big yardage but his total TDS nearly equaled his total INTs. That?s a piss poor season, not a Pro Bowl season by my estimates. I mean were Rex Grossman and Blaine Gabbert already booked for that weekend?

Okay, so of course Rivers is not Gabbert bad but there are QBs like Andy Dalton, who actually has a shot to lead his team to the playoffs, that got snubbed. Dalton may not have the name recognition but he certainly pulled off a lot with a little as a rookie. And what about Matt Stafford? Sure he may not have the same globally recognized facial grimace as an Eli Manning, but as a healthy starter for his team, he?s leading the Lions to their first playoff game in more than a decade after putting up some jaw dropping numbers. Hell, even Cam Newton deserved some serious consideration given what he?s been able to pull off in his rookie season. It?s not his fault his defense sucks balls.

Let?s take a looksy at the tight end position. Antonio Gates over Aaron Hernandez? Clearly, these voters never had to play against Aaron Hernandez in fantasy football. And what about Giants? wide receiver Victor Cruz? He was on my fantasy team and his awesomeness in large part carried me to the playoffs. He made Eli shine on plenty of plays. If not for his skills, at least reward the man for his awesome touchdown dance.

Beyond that, I wouldn?t say the Panthers? Steve Smith had such an impressive season that he deserves a Pro Bowl selection. In fact, Steve Smith from a few years ago would punch current Steve Smith in the face over his fumbles and crucial drops. (?Current Steve Smith? would then likely shank ?Past Steve Smith?, because current Steve Smith is still pretty scary.)

Much like a Hollywood awards show, the Pro Bowl picks seems so very subjective. But unlike with acting, there are subjective considerations AND hardcore numbers available to voters to help them make their decisions. In the same way that nominating the dude from Dexter every year has just gotten tired, so has what seems like automatic pilot voting for certain Pro Bowl categories.

Perhaps this is why, much like the Golden Globes, the Pro Bowl has lost some of its luster. I don?t know anyone who sits through either broadcast anymore, very few people seem to take either seriously, and even fewer remember who won the honors the year before. Maybe the NFL and the HFPAA can join forces for a new NBC Prime Time Special, ?The Golden Bowl?, where NFL players and actors team up in a battle on the gridiron?wearing tuxes and couture gowns. At least then everyone would be in on the joke.

If you still care who made the Pro Bowl, you can check out a complete Pro Bowl List here.

2ND LEAD: Christians flee north as Nigeria mourns church bomb victims Eds: Adds Muslim leader's condemnation

2ND LEAD: Christians flee north as Nigeria mourns church bomb victims Eds: Adds Muslim leader's condemnation

ABUJA, Dec 27, 2011 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Christians living in Nigeria's violence-prone northern towns were fleeing for the south Tuesday, amid fears of further attacks from the radical Islamist group Boko Haram.

At least 40 people were killed on Christmas day bombings of several churches, in attacks claimed by Islamist group Boko Haram.

Witnesses told dpa that the places witnessing the most movement were Kaduna, Maiduguri and Postiskum.

"The central motor park here is full; a lot of people are fleeing Maiduguri and Yobe," said Maiduguri motor park tout Mohammed Bolori.

"These people are mostly southerners who are afraid of more attacks, even though Christmas is over. Those who travelled (during the holidays) are not coming back en masse to these towns," Bolori said.

Many northern businesses are run by migrants from the south. "They run the show in our markets and without their business our economy is nothing," he said.

In the capital Abuja, relatives and friends of those killed in Nigeria's Christmas Day church blasts have been holding memorial services for those killed in the attacks.

Services were held Monday and Tuesday at the St Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town about 20 kilometres west of the capital Abuja, where at least 35 people were killed as Christmas services were ending.

Nigerian television reported that the explosion was caused by a car bomb that destroyed much of the church building and killed churchgoers as they poured out of the service.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for Sunday's attacks, which also targeted the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central Jos region, injuring several people and killing a policemen.

Two more attacks hit the volatile north-east, killing four people. One of the attacks was on a church in Gadaka, in Yobe state.

Monday's special mass was presided over by bishops who read passages from Pope Benedict XVI's Christmas address.

Among those in attendance was a 13-year-old girl who lost both her parents and all her siblings in the attack, newspaper The Nation reported.

Nancy Maduka's parents had allowed her to stay home and do her hair on Christmas morning, the newspaper said. Maduka later found the charred bodies of her parents and sisters in their car outside the church.

A mass burial was being considered for the victims, according to a morgue assistant at Abuja's National Teaching Hospital.

"A lot of families who came here could not recognise the victims. Most of the bodies are burnt beyond recognition ... a mass burial is being considered," assistant John Duniya told dpa.

Survivor Matthew Enebeli lost his pregnant wife in the Madalla blast.

"We were married for 10 years without a child. God blessed me and the devil has cut short my joy," Enebeli said.

He said his wife, who suffered from hypertension, had died from shock.

With many injured survivors undergoing treatment, a blood donation drive was underway. National Blood Transfusion Agency spokesperson Jane Ogbuio said turnout had been low, however.

Africa's religious and political leaders have been speaking out in the wake of the attacks.

On Tuesday the current Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, called the explosions "dastardly."

The sultan is widely regarded as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims.

He met with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and other traditional leaders to discuss promoting inter-faith peace.

South African President Jacob Zuma, who promised to work closely with Nigeria to promote peace during a recent visit there, released a statement expressing condolences "to families of the deceased and the injured, during this difficult time of mourning and sadness."

In the run-up to Christmas, Boko Haram had issued statements in which they threatened to disrupt holiday celebrations.

The group had vowed to seek revenge for the deaths of 59 of its members in a gun battle last Thursday with security forces in the town of Damaturu.

Police had stepped up a security drive, raiding suspected bomb factories and making key arrests in the weeks before the festival.

Last Christmas, dozens were killed in attacks on Christians, while Muslims have also died in violence during Islamic celebrations.

Baltimore Sun finds man memorialized on Facebook alive in London

If you followed last week?s internet rumor that a local man had been killed in an Air Jordans-related incident, then you?ll want to read the Baltimore Sun?s interview with the victim.

Actually, The Sun spoke with a 22-year-old Londoner whose photo was supposedly that of ?Tyreek Amir Jacobs.?

Jacobs, according to thousands of people spreading the rumor on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere, was a D.C.-area 18-year-old who had been killed on Thursday or Friday over the new Jordans.

?I?m actually alive,? said Sidney Boahen, whose image appeared on various Facebook and other pages paying tribute to Jacobs.

Boahen told The Sun that ?he was getting home from his job as a pharmacist trainee and saw in his Facebook inbox that a friend had seen the report. ?It?s you!? they said.

?Boahen said the photo was taken five years ago without his permission by a teacher. He remembers the photos being taken - but didn?t know they would eventually be sold and made available as stock images. ?This is a legal issue now, because I was only 17 at the time and he didn?t have my parent?s permission.??

Boahen was not amused by what appears to be a hoax. Police know of no such incident.

?Maybe there?s a person out there that [actually] died,? he told The Sun. ?No one should be killed over sneakers. But his picture should be up there, not mine.?

You're Fired! Donald Trump Bails on GOP Party

Donald Trump is declaring his independence.

After years as a registered Republican, the outspoken real estate mogul has filed paperwork to become an unaffiliated voter in his home state of New York.

Trump made the change official Thursday, a move prompted by his stated interest in mounting a third-party presidential run in 2012.

"Mr. Trump has said for almost a year that if he is not satisfied with who the Republican candidate is, he may elect to run as an independent," spokesman Michael Cohen said Friday. "This change in party affiliation certainly preserves his right to do so, after the finale of 'The Apprentice' in May."

Asked if any developments in the GOP race prompted Trump to make the change, Cohen said no. Trump has said he plans to endorse one of the Republicans running.

According to Politico, which first reported Trump's party switch, he will still be able to vote in the New York presidential primary in April. Trump had once been a registered Democrat.

Cohen also offered that Trump is "very disappointed" with how the Republican Party has handled the payroll tax extension, handing President Obama a political victory.

"Mission: Impossible" cruises to top of box office (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" cruised to No. 1 at box offices on Sunday, even as major new movies opened on Christmas Day which may change top 10 results when final numbers are tallied.

The new Tom Cruise movie rang up an estimated $26.5 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates, after expanding from a limited release in Imax and other large-screen theaters last week.

Paramount Pictures, which released the movie, said it expects a four-day tally of slightly more than $40 million by Monday, when final estimates are reported. The film's cumulative ticket sales are expected to reach just over $72 after Monday.

Indeed, the weekend box office race truly will finish on Monday because Christmas day annually is among the most crowded days in theaters and on Sunday, director Steven Spielberg's widely-anticipated "War Horse" makes its debut along with another newcomer, thriller "The Darkest Hour."

Hollywood's major studios loaded the release schedule last week heading into the holiday, expecting the films to play well between now and New Year's Eve while parents and kids are away from work and school. As a result, a clear picture of how the movie studios fared this Christmas season awaits the full week of box office reports.

Meanwhile, over the weekend Warner Bros' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" took the No. 2 spot on U.S. and Canadian (domestic) box office charts with $17.8 million, according to Sunday's estimates. Cumulative ticket sales for "Sherlock" after two weeks now stand at roughly $76.5 million.

Another holdover from last week, family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" squeaked into No. 3 with $13.3 million, pushing its total domestic ticket sales to $50.3 million after two weeks in theaters.

Following it were a trio of last week's newcomers, widely-anticipated "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," family film "The Adventures of Tintin" and comedy "We Bought A Zoo."

"Dragon Tattoo" landed at No. 4 on Sunday with $13 million, a hair behind the chipmunks, and a Sony spokesman cautioned the studio's figure could change when Sunday's figures are final.

"Today and tomorrow should be our strongest days of the holiday frame," the spokesman said, noting that the studio did not have a Monday estimate.

"Dragon Tattoo" now has estimated total domestic ticket sales of $21.4 million since its debut.

"Tintin," another Spielberg film released by Paramount, landed at No. 5 over the weekend with $9.1 million. The studio sees it rising to $14.3 million after Monday. Total ticket sales by Monday are seen at $22.3 million since its debut.

Finally, another new entry this weekend, the comedy "We Bought a Zoo," landed at No. 6 with $7.8 million.

Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Warner Bros. is part of Time Warner Inc.. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released by the movie studio division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. "Chipwrecked" and "Zoo" were both released by film divisions of 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..

Special Olympics in Doral, its own community

Anna-Marie Martinez loves her job.

As head coach of Doral?s Special Olympics program she is inspired daily by the effort and excitement her athletes put into practice.

Martinez had never spent time with children with intellectual disabilities, and she quickly found them to more special than anything else.

?They?re very enthusiastic about what they do and it?s helped me to see things in my life in a more positive light. They?re very inspirational,? Martinez said.

Martinez began as a volunteer in 2009 when the fledgling program was practicing on their own home-made bowling alley made from a red rug and plastic pins. There were nine athletes on the team.

Two years later they have 28 athletes and practice at Bird Bowl in Westchester.

The Doral kids compete at sports like bowling, track and field, and basketball against Special Olympic teams from elsewhere in South Florida. Special Olympics seasons are eight to ten weeks, and the top athletes go to summer and fall state competitions, which are free to the players.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968 giving children the chance to enjoy motion and pride in what they could do.

Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in my attempt.

This is the athlete?s oath for Special Olympics.

Mark Thompson, executive director of Special Olympics in Miami-Dade County says he witnesses bravery in athletes even before they step into the game. He remembers one young woman, typically shy, reciting the oath with self-assured perfection in front of a 1,000 of her comrades.

?I guarantee people will feel better about life after an event,? Thompson said. And he is not just referring to the athletes.

Given Thompson?s 22 years of experience in the non-profit sector, he thought he had a lot to offer.

?Shortly after it gave me more than I could possibly give back,? Thompson said.

This is a familiar testament given by many of the volunteers, families, and staff within the program?s wide orbit. Miami-Dade County has 80 programs and 2,500 athletes.

The Doral Special Olympics has blossomed into a community with its own dedicated pack of volunteers and supportive families showing up for competitions to cheer and help out.

?I have had several parents tell me that it has been hard to find programs their children can grow in and have long term development in,? Vianca Peron said. Peron serves as the Special Needs Programs Coordinator of Doral.

Lina Mejia said her daughter Paulina Botero started making friends and she became more sociable after she joined the Doral team.

?It?s like a family,? Mejia said.

And the athletes do win. Doral walked away in 2010 from its first state competition with one gold medal and two silver medals.

?One of the global benefits of the program is exposing the community to the misconceived perceptions of the population?s abilities,? Thompson said.

At competitions the number of hugs given out probably outnumbers the score, regardless of the sport being played. Given the challenges these kids face their generosity adds to their bravery.

Botero, 14, had to miss out on several events this year due to a litany of conditions she battles daily. Botero?s mother, Mejia, carries a printout and flash drive in her purse listing all her daughter?s ailments along with contact information for her doctors. She says her daughter teaches her to fight but she wishes some would try more to understand this population.

?There are a lot of people that don?t understand them,? Mejia said. ?They are really special. There is no evil, there is no hatred. Everything they have is lovely.?

The Special Olympics? number one priority is the athletes but their work is meant to reach a larger scope; to change attitudes and impact lives for the better.

Botero made it to the state championships for ramp bowling at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee. There were 6,000 bowling athletes at the competition. Botero went home with a silver medal.

?I like to be with me friends,? Botero said.

With basketball season concluding Martinez takes inspiring anecdotes. She recalls one young man trying for two years to make a basket. One day at practice, his shot suspended in the air, closer to the net than he had ever come and went in.

?Everything stopped. It was like a mini-celebration in the middle of practice,? Martinez said.

Now with a year-round schedule of seasonal sports and regular practices, Coach Martinez manages more than a full-time coaching schedule. She nurtures her relationships with her athletes.

?You need to be a very patient person, you need to be understanding and kind. I tend to look at the bigger picture, I?m more concerned with whether the athletes are having a good time,? Martinez said.

Mexico disbands entire police force in top port (AP)

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? The entire police force in the major Gulf coast port city of Veracruz was dissolved on Wednesday, and Mexican officials sent the Navy in to patrol.

The Veracruz state government said the decision is part of an effort to root out police corruption and start from zero in the state's largest city.

State spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off. At a press conference, she said they can apply for jobs in a state police force, but must meet stricter standards for an agency with officers "who are better trained and more committed and who can deliver under our current security circumstances."

Armed marines barricaded police headquarters Wednesday and Navy helicopters were flying above the city where 35 bodies were dumped in September. It was one of the worst gang attacks of Mexico's drug war.

The change was agreed upon Monday by Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte and federal Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire.

Mexico's army has taken over police operations several times before, notably in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and the border state of Tamaulipas. But Veracruz becomes the first state to completely disband a large police department and use marines as law enforcers. There are about 2,400 marines in the state of Veracruz.

Dominguez said the Navy operations will last only until the state can train more of its own police. Duarte already had disbanded a police force in the state's capital of Xalapa, but in that case state agents immediately replaced city police.

President Felipe Calderon has pushed an ambitious process for vetting all of Mexico's 460,000 police officers. His administration allocated $331 million for 200 cities to train and re-equip municipal police forces.

Governors have complained they lack the resources to ensure their police forces are clean.

Veracruz is a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south. It was first dominated by the Gulf Cartel, and then its former armed wing, the Zetas, took over after the two split. The state saw a rise in crime this spring after a government offensive in neighboring Tamaulipas scared drug criminals away to Veracruz.

But the dumping of the 35 bodies shocked Mexico as it turned the port into a battleground between the Zetas and a gang aligned with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Details of lab-made bird flu won't be revealed

(AP) ? The U.S. government paid scientists to figure out how the deadly bird flu virus might mutate to become a bigger threat to people ? and two labs succeeded in creating new strains that are easier to spread.

On Tuesday, federal officials took the unprecedented step of asking those scientists not to publicize all the details of how they did it.

The worry: That this research with lots of potential to help the public might also be hijacked by would-be bioterrorists. The labs found that it appears easier than scientists had thought for the so-called H5N1 bird flu to evolve in a way that lets it spread easily between at least some mammals.

"It wasn't an easy decision," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, infectious diseases chief at the National Institutes of Health, which funded the original research.

The scary-sounding viruses are locked in high-security labs as researchers at the Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands and the University of Wisconsin-Madison prepare to publish their findings in leading scientific journals. That's the way scientists share their work so that their colleagues can build on it, perhaps creating better ways to monitor bird flu in the wild, for example.

But biosecurity advisers to the government recommended that the journals Science and Nature publish only the general discoveries, not the full blueprint for these man-made strains. Tuesday, the government announced that it agreed and made the request.

In statements, the two research teams say they're making some changes, if reluctantly. The journals are mulling what to do, and the government didn't say precisely what should be left out.

But Science editor-in-chief Dr. Bruce Alberts said his journal pushed the U.S. government to set up a system where certain international researchers will be able to get the full genetic recipe for these lab-bred strains ? especially those in bird flu-prone countries like China and Indonesia.

"This is a sort of watershed moment," said Alberts, noting it's believed to be the first time this kind of secrecy has been sought from legitimate public health research.

He doesn't want to publish an abbreviated version of the findings unless he can direct scientists how to get the full, if confidential, details.

"It's very important to get this information out to all the people around the world who are living with this virus and are working on it," Alberts said.

NIH's Fauci said the system should be working very soon, so that international public health officials, scientists and drug companies with "a legitimate need to know can have access to that information."

Nature's editor-in-chief, Dr. Philip Campbell, also called the recommendations unprecedented.

"It is essential for public health that the full details of any scientific analysis of flu viruses be available to researchers, he said in a statement. The journal is discussing how "appropriate access to the scientific methods and data could be enabled."

H5N1 has caused outbreaks in wild birds and poultry in a number of countries around the world. But it only occasionally infects people who have close contact with infected poultry, particularly in parts of Southeast Asia. It's known to have sickened nearly 600 people over the past decade. But it's highly deadly, killing about 60 percent of the time.

The concern is that one day, bird flu might begin spreading easily between people and cause a pandemic. The NIH wanted to know what genetic changes it should monitor for, as a warning.

In surprise findings, the two teams of researchers separately re-engineered bird flu to create strains that can spread easily between ferrets. That animal mimics how humans respond to influenza.

That doesn't necessarily mean the new lab-bred flu strains could infect people, Fauci cautioned.

Still, the viruses are being kept under special conditions along with other so-called "select agents" for security and to guard against a lab accident, as researchers try to learn more about just how risky the H5N1 that circulates in the wild really could become.

"There is clearly a public health threat that has been lingering and smoldering with regard to H5N1 for several years," said Fauci, who adds that a naturally occurring flu pandemic is much more likely than any man-made one.

"Nature is the worst bioterrorist. We know that through history," he said.

More information on the two research projects isn't being released until the journals decide what to publish.

But in a statement last month, Dutch lead researcher Dr. Ron Fouchier said his discovery showed what mutations to watch for so "we can then stop the outbreak before it is too late."

Tuesday, Erasmus Medical Center said researchers were complying with the U.S. request to change their scientific report. But, "academic and press freedom will be at stake as a result of the recommendation. This has never happened before," the statement said.

The University of Wisconsin said virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka's team likewise would comply.

"While recognizing the potential for misuse of scientific discovery, the research described by UW-Madison researchers is essential for public health, global influenza surveillance activities and the development of vaccines and drugs to counter any potential pandemic," said a university statement.

An independent biosecurity expert called Tuesday's announcement a good middle-ground but said scientists should think twice about re-engineering influenza given the potential global consequences of an accident. The two labs involved are highly regarded, but more and more labs around the world can try similar work, noted Dr. D.A. Henderson of the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

"Influenza is certainly a unique beast in its capability to spread," said Henderson, who played a key role in the eradication of a different killer, smallpox. "The question is how can we assure experiments like this really aren't done in ways that the organism is apt to escape."

Officer testifies on soldier's access to secrets

An intelligence officer who worked with the Army specialist accused of giving U.S. secrets to the WikiLeaks website said Sunday that the soldier was considered to have an especially high understanding of enemy threats in Iraq and had to be trusted to keep the material he saw private.

The description of Pfc. Bradley Manning from one of his officers came at the beginning of the third day of a military hearing to determine whether he should be court martialed. He is accused of giving WikiLeaks a trove of government material while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men.

Capt. Casey Fulton testified for the prosecution that Manning had a "top secret" security clearance, enabling him to view a wide range of classified material. None of the material posted on WikiLeaks was classified higher than "secret."

Fulton said Manning was regarded as having a better understanding than other analysts of enemy threats in Iraq. She said analysts such as Manning, known as all-source analysts, were trained to synthesize intelligence from a wide array of intelligence sources.

Fulton said analysts are trained not to disclose classified information and are not allowed to burn classified information onto CDs for personal use. But she said it was impossible to supervise them 100 percent of the time.

"You have to trust that they'll safeguard the material the way that they've been taught," she said.

Fulton also said that sometime before April 2010 when WikiLeaks released a video featuring an Apache helicopter attack, she saw a similar clip on a workstation computer in Baghdad. She said Manning later showed her that the WikiLeaks clip and the one Fulton had seen were the same. Manning is suspected of leaking the video.

The hearing began Friday at Fort Meade outside Washington and could run several more days. The Army says it may take several more weeks for the commander of the Military District off Washington to decide whether Manning will be court-martialed.

Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington may choose other courses, including administrative punishment or dismissal of the 22 counts against him, including aiding the enemy. He also could add more charges based on evidence produced at the hearing.

Manning, who turned 24 Saturday, could face life in prison if convicted.

The Obama administration says the released information has threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America's relations with other governments. Manning's lawyers counter that much of the information that was classified by the Pentagon posed no risk.

Among the first issues to arise during weekend testimony was whether Manning's sexual orientation is relevant to the case against him. His attorneys maintained that his status as a homosexual in the military before the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

The defense revealed that Manning had written to one of his supervisors in Baghdad before his arrest, saying he was suffering from gender-identity disorder. He included a picture of himself dressed as a woman and talked about how it was affecting his ability to do his job and even think clearly.

Maj. Matthew Kemkes, one of Manning's lawyers, asked Special Agent Toni Graham, an Army criminal investigator, whether she had talked to people who believed Manning was gay or found evidence among his belongings relating to gender-identity disorder. The condition often is described as a mental diagnosis in which people believe they were born the wrong sex.

Graham said such questions were irrelevant to the investigation.

"We already knew before we arrived that Pfc. Manning was a homosexual," Graham said.

Prosecutors objected several times to the questions. Kemkes responded that if the government can argue that Manning intended to leak secrets, "what is going on in my client's mind is very important."

Manning's appearances over the last two days in the Fort Meade courtroom marked the first time he has been seen in public after 19 months in detention. The Oklahoma native comes to court in Army camouflage fatigues and wearing dark-rimmed glasses.

Manning sat calmly in the courtroom Saturday without appearing to react to the testimony, even when centered on his troubled mental state and homosexuality. Manning listened intently and regularly took notes.

The case has spawned an international support network of people who believe the U.S. government has gone too far in seeking to punish Manning.

Employee, 48, shoots 4, self at LA-area office (AP)

IRWINDALE, Calif. ? A man who shot four people, killing two, at a utility office east of Los Angeles before turning the gun on himself was a 48-year-old company employee from Southern California, authorities said Saturday.

Investigators identified the shooter as Andre Turner of Norco in Riverside County and ruled that his death was a suicide, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz told the Associated Press.

The two other men killed were Henry Serrano, 56, of Walnut and Robert Lindsay, 53, of Chino, Dietz said.

Two other shooting victims, a man and a woman whose names were not released, were in critical condition at a hospital, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

All five people worked for Southern California Edison in the same area of the same building at an office park in Irwindale, a small industrial city east of Los Angeles, authorities said. Authorities have released no information on a possible motive.

A phone number listed in Turner's name rang unanswered Saturday morning.

Horrified employees barricaded themselves behind locked doors and hid under desks Friday afternoon as Turner walked through the office firing a semi-automatic handgun, authorities said.

"This is one of the most horrible days in our company's history," said Edison International Chairman and CEO Ted Craver.

Four of the victims were Edison employees and one was a contract worker, authorities said. Police could not confirm media reports that at least two of the targeted victims were believed to be company managers.

The office complex and nearby schools were locked down as the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's SWAT team responded to several 911 calls.

Turner and Lindsay were found dead at the scene, and Serrano died at a hospital, authorities said.

No gunfire was exchanged after officers arrived, and police believed Turner acted alone

"As far as we know there was one shooting suspect, period," Baldwin Park police Capt. Michael Taylor said.

In the hours after the shooting, police cars, ambulances and fire trucks surrounded the building, and dozens of workers emerged with their hands over their heads.

The complex is surrounded by a fence and patrolled by a security guard. Employees need a security card to get into the building, said Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison. About 230 employees work in the building where the shooting took place, and about 1,100 employees work in the complex.

The utility's office is in a complex of buildings that also includes a business called California Lighting Sales.

Cindy Gutierrez, the controller for that company, said employees there didn't hear gunshots and didn't realize anything was amiss until building management announced over the intercom that everyone should stay indoors.

Two nearby schools were locked for about two hours after the shooting and no one on the campuses was hurt.

Irwindale is a city of about 1,400 residents in the San Gabriel Valley, 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the Irwindale Speedway auto racetrack and large rock and gravel quarries.

Southern California Edison is one of its largest companies, employing 2,100 people.

Sri Lankan commission: civilians weren't targeted (AP)

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka ? A government-appointed war commission has concluded that Sri Lanka's military did not intentionally target civilians in the final stages of the country's civil war and that ethnic rebels routinely violated international humanitarian law.

The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission acknowledged in a report presented to Parliament on Friday that some isolated allegations of civilian abuses by security forces needed to be investigated further.

The government appointed the commission last year amid intense international pressure to investigate alleged rights abuses toward the end of the war, which ended in May 2009.

The commission gathered evidence from ethnic minority Tamils, government officials, politicians, civil and religious leaders and former rebels. International rights groups refused to testify before it, saying it was pro-government, did not have a mandate to investigate abuses, and did not meet international standards.

The report listed allegations by witnesses that the navy had killed civilians who tried to escape the war by boat and that the army had forced civilians to retrieve the body of a dead soldier amid a hail of fire and had shot to death those refused to comply.

"In these circumstances the commission stresses that there is a duty on the part of the state to ascertain more fully the circumstances under which such incidents could have occurred, and if such investigations disclose wrongful conduct, to prosecute and punish the wrong doers," it said.

The commission, however, said it found no evidence of deliberate killings of civilians in "no-fire zones" set up in the final months of the war.

"On consideration of all facts and circumstances before it, the commission concludes that the security forces had not deliberately targeted the civilians in the NFZs, although civilian casualties had in fact occurred in the course of crossfire," it said.

The report, which was earlier presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels disregarded international humanitarian law in their combat strategies, and urged tough legal action against rebels being held in detention.

It accused the rebels of using civilians as human shields, killing civilians trying to escape the fighting, conscripting child soldiers, laying land mines, and using civilians as forced laborers.

Human rights groups have long accused both the government and Tamil Tiger rebels of abuses. A U.N. panel reported in April that it found credible allegations against both sides of abuses that could amount to war crimes. It said tens of thousands of civilians may have been killed in the final phase of the war and called for an independent international investigation.

After insisting for more than two years that not a single civilian had been killed by military strikes during the war, the government in August admitted to civilian deaths for the first time. Last month Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the president's brother, announced that the government has started a count of its own to ascertain how many civilians were slain.

U.S. leaps ahead, Europe debt woes touch Asia (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? U.S. jobless claims on Thursday fell to a 3-1/2-year low and a survey showed New York factories picked up speed this month, bucking gloomy economic trends set by Europe and Asia.

Stock index futures added to gains after the Labor Department revealed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 19,000 to 366,000 last week, the lowest level since May 2008.

And a business survey of New York factories provided more evidence that the U.S. economy is weathering the festering sovereign debt crisis in Europe, which is starting to crimp growth in emerging trade partners like China.

While the pace of decline in the euro zone's business economy unexpectedly slowed in December, surveys earlier on Thursday confirmed the region is almost certainly stuck in recession.

That leaves the United States as perhaps the only major Western power currently making a significant contribution to global economic growth.

"The data is all very in line with a modestly improving overall economy here in the United States," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in New Jersey.

"Stability in the U.S. economy is going to be a vital part of stabilizing global GDP. This comes at a very good time."

The New York Federal Reserve's "Empire State" general business conditions index rose to 9.53 from 0.61 the previous month. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 3.00.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's business activity indicator, another early gauge of private sector activity, is due at 1500 GMT and economists also expect it to rise sharply.

In the euro zone, Markit's flash composite purchasing managers' index (PMI), which corresponds closely with economic growth, rose unexpectedly in December to 47.9 from 47.0 last month.

But it has now lingered below the 50 line that divides growth from contraction for four months.

"(It) reinforces the notion that the euro zone economy is slipping into a mild recession rather than falling off a cliff," said Martin van Vliet, senior economist at ING.

The survey compilers warned against viewing its latest gauge of euro zone business as a turning point, especially since there is still a strong risk the euro zone sovereign debt crisis could spiral out of control.

RESOLUTION NEEDED

EU leaders last week took a historic step towards fiscal union last week, but pressure is building on reluctant euro zone paymaster Germany to take immediate, radical steps to solve the crisis.

A resolution to the crisis is all the more important as its repercussions spread through global economy. China saw its first year-on-year drop in foreign direct investment in 28 months in November.

The HSBC flash manufacturing purchasing managers' index, the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, rose modestly to 49.0 in December from 47.7 but pointing to a monthly contraction in activity nonetheless.

Most economists gave a cautious welcome to the euro zone PMI data, which measures changes in the activities of thousands of businesses across the euro zone.

"All in all, despite the further pick-up in December, the PMI data still suggest that euro zone real GDP saw a marked contraction in the fourth quarter," said ING's van Vliet.

The Markit Eurozone Composite PMI, which looks at both the manufacturing and services sectors,

Furthermore, only France and Germany were responsible for the upturn in the index, while the euro zone's peripheral economies continued to struggle.

Markit said its data pointed to a quarterly economic decline of 0.6 percent in the euro zone in the final quarter of this year.

That would be twice as deep as the contraction expected by economists in a Reuters poll on Wednesday, which also forecast a 0.2 percent fall in the first three months of the new year.

An escalation of the debt crisis could cause a far steeper contraction next year -- a scenario the Swiss National Bank warned on Thursday could not be ruled out, after holding its exchange rate cap on the franc against the euro for now.

There was one bright note on Thursday. The risk premium on benchmark Spanish bonds fell following a well-received bond auction that raised more than the government had targeted.
