How would you change the LG DoublePlay?

It's almost baffling to see a modern Android smartphone with such an archaic design in a world more accustomed to the Galaxy Nexus. Still, LG's late-2011 DoublePlay has a slide-out physical keyboard and that dinky second screen which reminds us of a phone that's years out of date. However, when we reviewed it, we found it to be very useful, even if it lacked a front-facing camera and weighed a metric ton okay, 190 grams. But how about you? Some of you bought this phone, some of you love it, so how has it been? Tell us in the space below.

How would you change the LG DoublePlay? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 06 May 2012 22:34:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

UNNATURAL SELECTION, DARWIN AND PIT BULLS

We?ve all heard the platitudes, Pit Bulls are the most loyal!?Pit Bulls were Nanny Dogs! Pit Bulls are highly intelligent! Dogfighters culled man biters!

How does the Humane profession ignore the Bloody Elephant in the room? One must go back to the mid-1980?s when Pit Bull advocacy was in it?s infancy? A decade earlier, the Animal Welfare Act of 1976 had criminalized the trafficking of fighting dogs. Prison-Sodomy avoiding Pit Bull breeders began selling dogs to the public and by the mid -1980?s, the maulings and deaths were skyrocketing. Around 1986, the humane profession set down a course that would make a tobacco lobbyist blush by pushing the ?It?s the owner? and ?unfairness to owners? meme which effectively took the onus off Pit Bull breeders to produce and sell reasonably safe animals.. First, there was the ?Are Pit Bulls different?? analysis done by HSUS behaviorists Familiarity with the animal also seems to offer less protection in the case of Pit Bulls. Out of 143 Pit Bull attacks, 19 (13.3%) involved attacks on the owner; out of 135 attacks by other breeds, only 3 (2.2%) involved the owner. Then there was the 1987 ?Pit Bull Summit? Veterinary/Animal Control Symposium at Tufts University which produced this slightly important public safety information: Pit Bull Bites are Worse. Later in 1993, The AVMA Professional Liability Trust published this document Do?s and Dont's concerning vicious dogs which was apparently used as a doorstop?

Since the 1987 Pit Bull Summit, 229 Americans have been killed by Pit Bulls and Dog Fighting, Pit Breeding and Pit Bull Advocacy has festered into a Billion dollar a year, codependent-tax free economy in which a host of individuals make their living. Thus far, ?The Pit Bull Economy? has not faced liability for the lives. limbs and sea of blood they have cost the public, not mention the costs of housing and euthanizing an estimated 1 Million Pit Bulls annually.

Enter now the question (pg 7):
Are Pit Bulls disloyal? Or?are they simply equal opportunity maulers that will attack any and all targets of opportunity when the breeding kicks in?owners, kids, neighbors, mailmen, other pets, horses etc?

Below is a list of Pit Bull owners killed or seriously wounded by their own animals? The list does not include children of Pit Bull owners? Those may be seen Here. Notice how many incidents where first responders must save the Pit Bull owner during a prolonged, berserk mauling?A suggested remedy is a ?Darla?s Law? where Pit owner reimburses the tax payer for labor, fuel, damaged equipment and ammunition expenditures.

When adopting or buying a new dog, keep these funerals and life changing shreddings in mind when the Pit pushers try to guilt you into taking a pittie home. Rest assured, they will be AWOL when the six figure medical bills are due!

Norton 360 Everywhere

Symantec's Norton 360 Everywhere ($99/year, direct) is a multi-platform security suite that can protect up to five PCs, Macs or Android devices and also includes 25GB of hosted online backup specifically for PCs. It's definitely a bargain for those with many devices to protect.

You use a single Norton 360 Everywhere license key to install protection on up to five devices. The online Norton Management console lets you check protection status and manage licenses. From the console you can remove protection from one device and transfer it to another, for example when you upgrade your smartphone.

PC Protection
This multi-suite protects your PCs with the powerful Norton 360 Version 6.0 ($79.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars). To get 25GB of backup with Norton 360 you'd have to purchase the Premium edition, which costs the same as Norton 360 Everywhere. That makes Norton 360 Everywhere a real bargain for those with more than three PCs.

Norton 360 excels in all areas. Its firewall handles threats and exploits without hassling the user. The spam filter and phishing protection are top-notch, and it performed well in antivirus tests by PCMag and by independent labs. Password management and form filling are handled by Norton Identity Safe (free, 4 stars), now available as a standalone product.

Full Suite for Macs
Like McAfee All Access ($99.95/year direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars), Norton 360 Everywhere offers a full security suite. Bitdefender Sphere ($99.95/year direct for? licenses, 4 stars), Kaspersky ONE Universal Security ($79.95/year direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars), and Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security Premium Edition ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 3 stars) just offer standalone antivirus to protect Macs.

Norton Internet Security for Mac scans for malware on demand and blocks threats in real time. It watches incoming email and instant messages, stripping out any malicious attachments. A two-way firewall protects against hack attacks. Website filtering prevents accidental visits to fraudulent (phishing) sites and sites hosting malware.

Mobile Security
Like most multi-device security suites, Norton 360 Everywhere specifically protects Android devices, both smartphones and tablets. McAfee and Kaspersky also include protective apps for BlackBerry and Symbian; Kaspersky adds Windows Phone 7.

In addition to antivirus protection, Norton Mobile Security 2.0 ($29.95 direct) lets users locate, lock, or wipe a stolen phone by sending a coded text message. Its SIM card lock feature prevents a thief from changing out the phone's SIM card. Norton Mobile Security steers users away from phishing sites and can block unwanted calls and texts.

It's Not Norton One
In many ways Norton 360 Everywhere resembles Norton One ($149.95/year direct for five licenses, 4.5 stars). Both protect up to five Macs, PCs, or Android devices. Both come with 25GB of online backup. Both install on multiple devices with a single license key that can be managed online.

What extras do you get for Norton One's $149.95/year? For starters, it comes with 24/7/365 premium support. Contact support via live chat or have support call you; they'll handle any security-related task, from helping with installation to making sure a pesky virus is really gone. Norton One also streamlines the process of installing protection on your devices.

Another difference crops up if you want to protect more than five devices. To add a sixth device with Norton One, you pay one-fifth of the five-license price pro-rated over the time remaining in your subscription. For example, adding a sixth device halfway into the subscription would cost about $15.

Norton 360 Everywhere doesn't offer pro-rated licensing. To protect more than five devices you need another subscription. The same is true of Kaspersky ONE, though you can purchase three-, five-, or ten-device packages. Trend Micro's multi-device suite specifically protects three Macs, three PCs, and three Android devices.

?ber-geeks with dozens of devices may prefer the unlimited licensing offered by McAfee All Access and Bitdefender Sphere. For the same price as Norton 360 Everywhere, McAfee protects all devices owned by an individual while Bitdefender protects all devices in the household.

If you want set-and-forget protection with all the hand-holding you could ever need, Norton One is for you. But if you're capable of handling any technical issues yourself and want to save a little money, Norton 360 Everywhere is a better deal.

Campaign - The North Carolina Writers' Network

From our friends at the Triad-based organization Poet. She:

Just in time for summer break, female spoken word and performance group, Poet. She has launched a Fight for Literacy campaign from May 2012 until the new academic school year.

The six-week reading and creative writing after school program has been proven to increase the literacy skills of students at Rankin, Peck, and Jones elementary schools as well as Greensboro Montessori, Guilford, and Kiser middle schools. Due to the high demand of the program needed in schools with little to no budget or resources, Poet. She needs $55,000 for staffing and workshop expenses to spread the program to all 90 elementary and middle schools.

?Students benefit from the program because they have the freedom to creatively express themselves as they strengthen skills needed in their upcoming grade level,? says Poet. She founder, Kelly Williams. ?Schools will benefit with lower retention rates and an overall improvement of student academic success.?

The entire Greensboro community is urged to contribute towards increasing reading and writing skills among Guilford County students. Donation boxes are being set up at local and franchised businesses. There will also be Poet. She spoken word events and fundraisers held throughout the summer whose proceeds will go towards the goal.

To donate now or for more information on the campaign?s donation box locations, fundraiser, and upcoming events visit www.poetshe.org or email Poet. She at poet.she7@gmail.com.

Poet. She is a female spoken and literary group and non profit organization that strives to strengthen the female prescence in the literary and spoken word community. Founded in 2010 by Kelly Rae Williams and Paula Latham, Poet. She is for women who are passionate about poetry, writing, and literature, but most importantly, share the desire to spread it within the community. The organization consists of performers and writers of anything from poetry, prose, monologues, and fiction to random streams of consciousness. Along with poetry events, members of Poet. She are creative writing teachers and storytellers in the Guilford County schools system, currents teaching at over 4 elementary schools, the Greensboro Children?s Museum, and the Civil Rights Museum. The women are open for show booking, events planning, and public speaking. They have graced over 7 different radio shows, magazines, and newspapers.

Motorola Droid 3 getting a sizable update, but not to ICS

The Motorola Droid 3 has a large system update queued and ready to roll out, but it's just another version of Gingerbread. The 5.7.905.XT862 update checks in about 230 MB, and is chock full of fixes, patches, and enhancements -- all very welcome for most any user. With "only" 512 MB of RAM, we didn't really expect the Droid 3 to ever officially run Ice Cream Sandwich, but there's always that glimmer of hope when we see the system update prompt. What did get fixed and updated? I'm glad you asked.

• A Google Security Patch has been added to improve the security level.
• Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.
• Avoid device interruption when accessing an application prior to the storage being fully mounted on the device.
• Improvements in device stability help avoid device power cycles.
• When connected to a Bluetooth® headset or HDMI cable, the device will no longer lock up and power cycle.
• Improvements to the camera’s auto focus will reduce the shutter response time and enhance the quality of captured imagery.
• Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
• Use a wired headset without the interruption of a high pitched tone.
• Plus code dialing has been enhanced, improving the experience while traveling.
• Playback media can be heard while using a Bluetooth headset.
• Place a call to the appropriate recipient using the contact widget.
• When moving applications to the SD card, shortcuts to these Apps will remain.
• After updating the contact database from the Messaging App, the Messaging UI will display the latest contact information.
• Successfully post and play videos on Facebook.
• Purchased ringtones are now able to be downloaded, saved and used where appropriate.
• Contact pictures display properly in Google Voice.
• VZ Navigator 3D City is now preloaded.
• Resolved excessive data usages and continuous downloading for VZ Navigator® 3D City downloads.

Soccer player defects from Cuba, requests asylum in US

Soccer player defects: A Cuban national soccer player disappeared while his team was playing in an Olympic soccer tournament in Tennessee.

Yosmel De Armas is a Cuban soccer player who has defected in order to seek asylum in the United States. While in Nashville, Tennessee last month for an Olympic qualifying soccer tournament, the Cuban midfielder was absent from his national team's final game against Canada, although he played on Saturday?s 4-0 loss to El Salvador.?

When asked why the player skipped the game, the Cuban national coach said De Armas was sick and remained at the team's hotel. However, when the team left Nashville, the promising soccer player did not accompany his teammates on their return trip to the island nation.

Although US officials refused to comment about the player?s whereabouts, it was reported that De Armas was last seen in Miami.?

"We're preparing an asylum application to file with the Department of Homeland Security," attorney Alex Solomiany said, according to Reuters.?

The Miami-based lawyer, who?described his client as "nervous," said De Armas is "alone here"?and that he was on his way to Miami at the time of the game, contrary to the coach's allegations.

A rising number of Cuban athlete defections are explained by several factors: the continuous financial hardship the populace faces in Cuba, the plethora of defection precedents that make the process look easy, and the luring prospects of a better life, all coalesce to urge young athletes to follow this path.?

"This is another case of a Cuban sportsman trying to get a decent life, to try to take control of his own career," Omar Lopez told Reuters.? Lopez is general director of the Cuban American National Foundation, a Miami-based organization of Cuban exiles who seek political change on the island.

Four years ago, seven members of the Cuban under-23 national soccer team also sought political asylum after competing against its US counterpart in Tampa, Florida.?

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Yenier Bermudez told the Miami Herald, according to ESPN.

Since the 2002 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) tournament in Los Angeles, a total of 15 Cuban soccer players abandoned their teams and requested political asylum in the United States.

Beam-switching endows electron microscopes with 3D, added gross-out

Having haunted our curtailed childhoods with tiny, disgusting horrors, the scanning electron microscope is about to get a new lease of life in 3D. Researchers in Japan have figured out how to deflect the electron beam rapidly to give two slightly shifted views, so real-time 3D images can now been scoped on a monitor without even the need for eye-wear. Current gear can only muster flat images, so it's always been painfully slow for scientists to extract convexity and other details from objects. Though the 3D-version is lower-res than the old way, at least now all those slimy mandibles and egg sacs will be right there in your face. Nice.

Samsung Galaxy S III US sign-up page goes live

So enthused with the Galaxy S III that you want to know exactly when in the summer Americans can buy one? You can follow us, of course, but Samsung has you covered with a sign-up page that will take your vitals with promises that you'll "get the latest on the Next Galaxy." We wouldn't read too much into seeing AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and others in the list of carriers to choose from, though. Samsung has run identical sign-up campaigns in the US before, and it focused the initial Galaxy S II launch on three major carriers rather than carpet bombing every network at once.

[Thanks, Michael]
